Fact 253: When was the current National Gallery built?



The current National Gallery was designed by William Wilkins.
In 1831 the Parliament at the time which was the The Whigs agreed to fund a building for the National Gallery and Parliament eventually chose Trafalgar Square for its location.
The current National Gallery was finally opened in 1838. The current Natinal Gallery building at Trafalgar Square, is the third site to be the National Gallery.
