Fact 355: Who painted Nighthawks?

Nighthawks is a 1942 oil-on-canvas painting by the American artist Edward Hopper, Edward Hopper was in born: 22 July 1882 (New York) and died: 15 May 1967 (New York).
Edward Hopper's Nighthawks is often regarded as one of the most famous artworks of the 20th century in America. The painting depicts 4 anonymous figures 2 men, 1 woman and a bartender in a midnight scene at 'Phillies' diner.
I find this painting is intriguing and fascinating because it raises a lot of questions, for example who are the people and why are they there and is the guy at the back listening in to the 2 people or waiting for someone or on his own, etcetera?
