Now, this may surprise you to know that, the umbrella was first used to protect people from the sun. First invented in Egypt around 1000 BC, they were first made out of leather or leaves or stretched papyrus and attached to a stick.
 
The waterproof umbrella wasn't invented until the 11th century (1001 -1100 AD) in China. The waterproof umbrella was made out of paper that was coated in wax with normally a bamboo or mulberry bark frame connected in the middle to a bamboo stick.
