Fact 28: Where does the word maths come from?
The word maths dates back to the word Geek, màthēma, meaning learning, study and science. In the Ancient Greek times, it was in lengthened to mathēmatiká and changed its meaning to mathematical study (the study of maths) the word we actually used comes from Latin word mathematica we chopped off the a making it mathematics and then shortened the word to maths. mathematica the Latin word was influenced by the Greek word mathēmatiká.
This is the shortened version!
The longer version is this!
The word we use is maths, this is similar in many ways to the French word les mathématiques because these are both from the Latin word mathematica, the word was influenced by the Greek word ta mathēmatiká, this was the word used by Aristotle (a famous philosopher and mathematician).
The word mathēmatiká meant basically all things mathematical.
So basically the Greeks had a word meaning study and science later on it meant things to do with numbers(what we would say was maths), the Romans (Latin speaking people) were influenced by the word and changed from the Greeks word to there word and we used the Latin word and shortened it to mathematics and then we charged it by shortening it to maths.
